The U.S. government finally issued its long-debated rules for noise-making devices in so-called "quiet cars."

They require all new hybrid and plug-in electric cars to emit noises that alert pedestrians to their presence.

Because these cars operate near-silently on electric power, regulators have expressed concerns that they constitute a greater safety risk to pedestrians than noisier internal-combustion cars.

DON'T MISS: 'Quiet Car' Rules To Make Hybrids, Electric Cars Noisy Delayed, Again (Dec 2015)

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) was directed by Congress to issue these "quiet car" rules in 2010, but they have been delayed multiple times.

NHTSA believes the new rules will help prevent 2,400 pedestrian injuries a year, once a substantial number of vehicles equipped with noisemakers are on the road.

The agency received praise from the American Council of the Blind and National Federation of the Blind, both of which have lobbied heavily for adoption of the rules.

WHAT!!!

Just stupid. The amount of electric vehicles on the road is not enough to decrease pedestrian accidents

Show me the study that proves this bit until that happens I think it's ridiculous

Authorities in Auckland, New Zealand are urging all dumbasses to look both ways before they cross train tracks, after a local dumbass was nearly hit yesterday. But in fairness to the dumbass, the new electric trains in the area are pretty quiet. Too quiet, if you ask this dumbass.

Modern urban life is one of noise, for dumbasses and non-dumbasses alike. But with the rise of humanity’s dumbass electric cars and dumbass electric trains, our dumbass brains haven’t yet learned that some trains make a lot less noise these days.

“It’s really important that you check both directions before crossing, a train can come from either direction,” local rail services manager Craig Inger told New Zealand Herald. “The lights and bells mean don’t cross!”

It could not be confirmed by press time whether Mr. Inger meant to say, “The lights and bells mean don’t cross, dumbass!”

I guess this is a real thing. Pedestrians don't see the need to look both ways before crossing the road or train tracks - stupid crazy. People have become seriously lazy
